Dr. Order’s is an innovative creation, though Yvan Gessler’s work feels a bit repetitive

Swiss musician and producer Yvan Gessler, also known as Dr. Compressor, is an abstract hip hop artist with a new release titled Dr.’s Orders, a whirlwind of rich hip hop beats and sounds in the vein of Aphex Twin and Portishead. After contracting a virus in the early 2000’s that left a ringing in his ear, Yvan has found that composing music helps the noise settle as it allows him to focus on something else besides the ringing, leading him to not think of himself as a musician, but as someone who just enjoys playing around with sounds and beats as a creative outlet. While his latest record includes warm and jazzy beats with a foundation comprised of hip hop influences, Dr.’s Orders has a largely repetitive feel, since the album is entirely devoid of vocals and other sounds that make each song different. While Dr. Compressor has done an excellent job at making his tracks stand out, one of the aspects of the recording that we notice immediately is Gessler’s decision to title his songs using Roman numerals instead of using conventional song titles.

While he may have titled his tunes this way to keep things uniform, it becomes a bit confusing for his audience as this creates problems when trying to differentiate between each track and their own characteristics and sound. And while the LP’s distinctive vibe makes it a somewhat innovative creation, its lack of differentiation leaves much to be desired among the audience that Gessler is yearning to appeal to.
