On Amber Ikeman’s new album Free, we hear a mix of acoustic and Americana music that will resonate with her audience, and introduce them to her biggest artistic passion-music. After a childhood full of vocal lessons and stints teaching Zumba dancing, Ikeman decided to quit her job as a non-profit employee and begin a journey pursuing music after years of believing that it would never work. Since embarking on her new career path, Amber has set off on a trip across the United States to explore its national parks and perform for anyone who will listen.
The records first track “Angel’s Landing” is a song that illustrates the influence that Amber takes from Americana and folk music, letting her listeners hear her relaxed and airy voice, allowing us to get acquainted not only with Amber’s songs, but with her desire to be a free individual who makes their passion their life’s work.
“Burning All My Bridges” takes on a haunting vibe, while still playing the folk style that we heard on “Angel’s Landing.” While Amber’s music is mostly folk influenced, this song takes on a jazzy feel which adds another layer to Ikeman’s songs, while also including a harmonica to bring in a bluesy angle that sounds great among the other tones and sounds.
“Roots” the next track on Free, begins with Amber’s voice and a beautiful piano part that really highlights Ikeman’s vocals and gives it an emotional edge that we love. While we enjoy hearing Amber sing among the other instruments, hearing it against a piano gives the tune a raw style that fits amongst the rest of the record’s selections.
“Give Me A Home” closes out Free and we are once again treated to Amber and her wispy voice with the piano, telling a great story that will become a favorite among Amber’s fan base. Free is an album that will be enjoyed and appreciated by many, though particularly among folk and Americana fans. For other music enthusiasts, Amber Ikeman is an artist that will touch you deeply as we not only get a glimpse into who Amber is, but whom she wants to become.
